McDermitt Combined School kitchen staff person Freda Dick received recognition and a much deserved round of gratitude from Humboldt County School Board Chairwoman Glenda Deputy. Dick responded quickly to a young child choking on a carrot in the cafeteria. District Superintendent Dr. Dave Jensen told the board about her heroic efforts, “On Monday, January 13, 2020, Freda Dick stopped a fourth-grade student from choking on a carrot during lunch when he approached the lunch window for help. As he approached, he was noted to be turning blue and couldn't breathe. Freda sprung into action and applied some swift back blows, ejecting the carrot and saving this young man's life.” Dick said she was putting away dishes when she looked up toward the cafeteria area and noticed the boy was having trouble breathing. “I went over there, and I helped him” she told the trustees.
